Endnote 7 Cite while you write and Word 2003
How to get the Cite While You Write tools to show up in Word 2003 after
installing Endnote 7. Normally this would happen automatically upon
installation of Endnote, but sometimes it doesn't.
1. Within Microsoft Word go to the Tools menu and select Options.
2. Click the File Locations tab, highlight the Startup folder, and look at the location listed. It will be something like C:\...\Microsoft\Word\STARTUP. If you want to figure out the whole path, click the Modify button to search through the folders. The full path will be something like C:\Documents and Settings\User\ApplicationData\Microsoft\Word\STARTUP where User is your login name. Note that the ApplicationData folder is normally hidden from view in the User folder. If you open your user folder via Windows Explorer, go to the menu Tools>Folder Options, click on the View tab, and choose to Display hidden folder and files. This will then reveal the ApplicationData folder to you.
3. Close Word and Outlook.
4. Launch Windows Explorer and locate your EndNote folder. The default installation path is “C:\Program Files\EndNote”.
5. There are two files in this folder you need to copy, EN7cwyw.dot and EN7cwyw.wordxp.wll. The EN7cwyw.wll might be useful for version of Word prior to Word XP and Word 2003 (i.e. Word 97 and 2000).
If you do not see the .wll and .dot file extensions, go to the Tools menu and select Folder Options -> View tab. Uncheck the box that reads “Hide file extensions for known file types” and click OK.
Locate the Word Startup folder and paste these two files into this folder. If you cannot find the specified folder, your Windows preferences may be set to hide the folder. In Windows Explorer go to Tools -> Folder Options -> View tab and make sure that "Show hidden files or folders" is selected.
Start Microsoft Word, but pay attention to the next bit:
Now close word and open EndNote. Now re-open Word and click on one of the EndNote tools. The programs need to be opened in this order once in order to register the changes to the registry correctly.
Now, the only real problem at this point is that the original EN7cwyw.dot file that came with Endnote 7 didn't allow the keyboard shortcuts to work. It needs to be replaced with an updated version of the file, available from other sites on the web. You swap this EN7cwyw.dot file with the one you just installed in the Word STARTUP folder and you're good to go.
This article says essentially the same thing I have, and they have the updated EN7cwyw.dot file:
